Explaining shared custody to your children

Going through a divorce can be very difficult for even couples that knew their marriage wasn't strong. It can be even more challenging when you add children to the mix. Whether you are divorced or simply had a child with someone, you will need to come to an agreement on child custody. Once the agreement is in place, you will need to explain it to your child, especially when it involves shared custody.

If you don't do any of the other tips in this post, make sure you follow this one: Remain positive. You need to highlight the positives of the arrangement and stay positive with your child at all times. This will be a big change for your children and it shouldn't be taken lightly. Speak highly of it and all the good that will come of it.

As you begin to explain shared custody, you need to inform your child of all that will remain the same. You will both still be their parents. The child will receive the same, if not more, love from both of you. Then you need to explain what will change. The biggest change will be that the child will need to sleep in a different home when with each parent instead of everyone being together.

Let your children have time to process their new living situation. In fact, you and your former spouse will need time to process it as well. Once you've given the children time to process shared custody, you should encourage them to ask any and all questions they might have.

Shared custody is a common option for people who have the means and work schedule to make it a successful arrangement. Explaining this arrangement to your children doesn't have to be difficult if you follow the tips that were discussed in this post.
