Can your divorce be based on a 'ridiculous' fight?

If you’re familiar with family comedy shows such as “This Is Us” and “Modern Family” you may know about how petty arguments between married couples can morph into big problems. On television, these types of disputes typically turn into comedic moments, but sometimes emotional moments come about.

Of course, real life is not television, even though art sometimes imitates life. But an article from the Huffington Post exemplifies how sometimes “ridiculous” arguments can lead to couples breaking up. This post will highlight a couple of them.

The recurring dream fight – A marriage therapist recounted how a continuing fight was threatening a couple’s marriage. The wife was having recurring dreams that her husband was cheating on her with a close friend of hers. The dreams were not based on anything that was happening in real life, but the wife used the dreams as ammunition to treat the husband badly and further deteriorate the marriage.

Changing rules on open relationships – A husband and wife were in an open relationship but had complex rules about their monogamy and when each party could see their significant others. The husband saw the wife with her boyfriend on one occasion and launched a jealousy filled revenge offensive to annoy her.

While these fights may seem trivial, far-fetched and ultimately ridiculous, they are examples of how problems that may cause you consternation may be viewed in the eyes of the court. This doesn’t mean that your unique problems are not real or significant. Rather, it means that a discussion with an experienced family law attorney can help in sorting through problems before taking legal actions.
