Former slugger Danny Tartabull has family law problems

Many Chicago baseball fans probably remember Danny Tartabull, a former All-Star who played for several teams during his 14-year major league baseball career. Now he is in the news for a very different reason: violating family law, which may also have criminal consequences.

According to reports, despite making more than $30 million during his career, the former slugger is more than a quarter million dollars behind in child support for his two sons. Tartabull's failure to pay, according to court documents, violates the terms of his probation. As a result, the court ordered Tartabull to surrender himself and serve 180 days in county jail.

Tartabull did not appear, so now he is in further hot water. The court issued an arrest warrant, and set his bail at $200,000.

We do not know the circumstances behind Tartabull's failure to pay. Nonetheless, whatever those facts are, they likely did not have to escalate into the current circumstance. Tartabull, like all Illinoisans with too-hefty child support bills, had options.

Specifically, Tartabull could have sought a downward modification. Illinoisans facing a similar scenario should act quickly because a downward modification only applies to future payments. It will not erase child support already owed.

To file, document the reason you need the change. Common reasons that might get the court to change the child support order include losing a job, new medical expenses and other major changes outside your control. Once you have proper documentation, file it with the court that issued your child support order. You will also need to give the other parent a copy.
