Many Illinois residents know that going through a divorce is an emotionally draining process. However, one of the hardest parts of ending a marriage involves child custody issues. If you are worried about the fate of your child, you should know that there are ways to enhance your child custody case. A recent article reports that being involved in your child’s school is a good place to begin.

As it turns out, a teacher’s testimony can have significant impact on a child custody determination. Many courts call teachers in to testify about a parent’s involvement in a child’s life. Therefore, it is important for a parent to participate in his or her child’s educational environment.

It is important to understand that when parents separate, only one parent is usually contacted by the school to participate in activities. In addition, sources explain that it is often the mother who volunteers at school, carpools, drops off the snacks or takes school calls. All of a mother’s regular exposure to the school helps her case in a custody dispute.

For this reason, as a father, sources suggest getting involved in your child’s school. For example, you may want to attend parent-teacher conferences, pick up your kid and stay in contact with your child’s teachers. This will require providing teachers with your contact information and asking them to inform you about upcoming school events and opportunities.

Strong participation in your child’s school ensures that you are doing everything in your power to enhance your child’s educational growth. In the end, with such involvement, a child custody judge may find that your presence is beneficial to your child’s life.
